The research process

We are currently conducting data collection.

At the end of the second year of the project we interviewed already 75 social workers and more than 600 filled in the online survey! We still plan to interview at least 25 social workers more and have the online survey filled in by 917 respondents…

Short presentation of the project

Previous workforce studies on social workers were based on membership data from professional associations, from schools of social work or from labor statistics when available. After more than 25 years of ideologically-based abolition during the communist regime social work in Romania is a relatively young profession. With more than 30,000 graduates out of whom 5,000 are registered with the National College of Social Workers, little is known about this workforce. The general objective of the research is to understand who is working in the social work system in Romania, what activities are carried out, in what type of organizations are social workers to be found and in what proportions and how do they perform their daily duties by providing the first nationally representative survey of social workers in Romania. The present study, building on previous studies carried out by the project leader is aiming not only to describe some basic characteristics of the social workers, but to offer for the first time in Romania an accurate picture of their roles, responsibilities, activities and an assessment of their needs. The research will be carried out with the support of CNASR and its 37 regional branches, whose active member the project leader is since 2005. The innovative character of the research is given by the participatory research strategy, the combination of mixed research methods (900 questionnaires and 100 interviews) and its novelty for Romania.
